City Overview
Amsterdam is the largest city in the Netherlands. Probably the most planned city in the Northern Europe, the city has long been a well known tourist destination. The city's layout is determined by a web of canals. The historical centre, which dates from the thirteenth century, is girdled by five concentric canals, the Grachtengordel, dug in the seventeenth century as part of a planned expansion to create a uniquely elegant urban environment. It is here that the city's merchant class built their grand mansions, typified by tall, gracefully decorated gables, whose fine proportions are reflected in the still, olive-green waters below.
Amsterdam's nightlife can have you careening between smoky coffee shops, chic wine bars, mellow jazz joints, laid-back lounges, and clubs either intimate or raucous. The bona fide local flavour can perhaps best be tasted in one of the city's ubiquitous brown café bars called 'brown' because of their woody walls and nicotine-stained ceilings.
