City Overview

Pattaya has grown in a recent years from being a sleepy fishing village into a bustling place. The main beach is over 4 km long and overlooks the bay where boats depart to nearby islands. It runs parallel to a beautiful promenade and beach road with trees. Central and southern part of the town is busier. Here you will find many local shops, boutiques, supermarkets, drugstores, beauty salons, restaurants, bars, discos and nightclubs. There are several big shopping malls on the main streets of Pattaya. Big C, located on Second Road is a large shopping mall with boutiques, shops and fast food restaurants.
If you are after quiet holiday then head to Jomtien Beach, a 6 km long beach which is a lot quieter than the other beaches of Pattaya. The beach is especially popular with windsurfers and other water sports enthusiasts, mainly because of the breeze from the Gulf of Thailand. In Jomtien you will also find a number of good hotels and holiday resorts along the beach, some bungalow complexes and many restaurants. Mike Shopping Mall and Royal Garden Plaza are located between the Second Road and Beach Road South and here you can buy almost anything including clothes, shoes, accessories and sportswear.
Pattaya is most famous for its go go and beer bars, but local authorities have recently made efforts to provide more family friendly tourist attractions and activities. Pattaya also has Asia's largest gay scene which is based around the Boyztown and Sunee Plaza. If you are going to be offended by the sight of fat old European men hand in hand with young Thai women, then Pattaya is probably not the place for you. Although the sex industry in Pattaya is still going strong and sex tourism remains the key income for the city, the resort todasy also attracts many families from far and wide.
Pattaya is located around 120 kilometres by road from the Suvarnabhumi Airport, the Bangkok international hub. You can travel to Pattaya from Bangkok by bus from the Southern Bus Terminal on Sukhumvit Road, near Ekamai. Buses also run regularly from the North Terminal. Hua Lampong Railway Station runs daily train services to Pattaya. You can also take a taxi to Pattaya which is more expensive of course. Travel within Pattaya is easy with pickups on Beach Road and Second Road. Visitors can also explore Pattaya, because there are plenty of places where motorcycles, cars and jeeps that can be hired.
