City Overview
Phuket is the most popular area of Thailand for holidays and sports with several excellent golf courses. A beautiful tropical island with great beaches, countless options for hotel resorts, dining and nightlife, and has perhaps the best golf in all of Thailand. It can be more expensive than some other holiday destinations in Southern Thailand, particularly during the high season, from mid April through October.
Phuket has some nice shows and cultural attractions for tours, though the main attractions are golf, beaches and spas. Phuket is a one hour flight from Bangkok and not very practical to be reached by land. Many airlines operate daily flights to Phuket from many major cities and some international fly directly to Phuket. The tourist hotspot lies on the Andaman Sea, 867 kilometres south of Bangkok.
The two main beaches of Phuket are Patong Beach and Karon Beach. Patong Beach is Phuket's most developed beach. It offers numerous opportunities for sport, shopping and sunbathing. The best diving and snorkelling are also in this area. Patong is also known for its vibrant nightlife, many seafood restaurants and bars which play an important role. Karon Back lies just outside the center, but is fast to reach by tuktuk or a taxi. Here the beach is beautiful and not as busy as Patong Beach.
Again there are numerous restaurants and shops, but very peaceful, so you can fully enjoy your rest on this lovely beach. When you are ready to go out, the nightlife of Phuket will not disappoint. All over the Phuket, there are nice bars, but the real vibrant nightlife is in Patong. Patong is Phuket's largest entertainment district, spread over Bangla road with many beer bars, clubs, live music, go-go bars and cabaret shows. In Phuket you can also do a lot of nice things like enjoying Phuket Fantasea Dinner Show where you will enjoy a lovely buffer dinner with elephants, fireworks, acrobats, dancers, comedy, drama, Thai music and a fun story line too.
Near Phuket you will find one of the most beautiful beaches and islands like the famous Maya Beach where the movie the Beach was filmed with Leonardo Dicaprio, Monkey Beach and Viking Cave. You can easily go to Phi Phi Island which takes approximately 2 hours by boat. Phuket is famous for its delicious fresh fish and shellfish dishes, but there are also many restaurants serving traditional Thai cuisine. Also, if you want something a little different, Phuket offers a huge range of many other possibilities. Spectacular scenery, stunning sunsets and blue sea awaits you at Asia's most popular beach destination.
There are several Italian and French restaurants, and several steakhouses. In some restaurants in Phuket you can eat while enjoying traditional Thai dance. There are musical performances and cabaret shows held in the restaurants. These restaurants are mostly in Patong. In addition, in Phuket Town you will find footstalls. Eating on the streets can be cheap and they do have delicious food. The portions are perhaps a little small, but the Thai is used to eat about six times a day and enjoy small meals. The well known noodle soup and Padtha: noodles, tofu and stir-fry vegetables are recommended.
In Phuket, there are excellent opportunities for shopping. Even avid shopper cannot believe their eyes in Phuket. Besides the many markets and stalls on the side of the road, there is a number of large shopping centres, many fine boutiques and special shops where traditional Thai products are sold. Here you will find other Thai silk, jewellery, antiques and clothing. The best bargains can be made in Phuket Town, but there are also many nice shops and stalls in Patong, Kata and Karon. The nice thing is that you can shop until late evening every single day in the week.
Accommodation Overview
The ability to stay on Phuket is very diverse. All over the Phuket there is good holiday accommodation for every taste and budget. On the coast you will find mostly middle class and luxury hotels and holiday resorts. In Phuket Town, Patong and Kata beach, there are many guesthouses where you can stay for little money and can be ideal for backpackers. For families with children you will find numerous good hotels and holiday resorts with children facilities and even babysitting services. Most hotels are nicely located at the beach so you can enjoy a beautiful view from your hotel room.
It is important to find the right location in Phuket. You can stay at the popular Patong Beach area but it could be crowded and busy by night. If you are rather like to have a little bit more quit stay then choose Karon Beach or any of the hotels outside the Patong Beach. Some hotels and resorts even have a private beach where you can relax in peace. For the young people Patong Beach is the area to stay, numerous guesthouses and cheap hotels you will find here too.
