City Overview

Rome is the capital of Italy and the country's most populated city and the capital of the Lazio region. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber River within the Lazio region of Italy. Famous for the Roman Empire, La Dolce Vita, the Seven Hills, the Three Coins in the Fountain and the Vatican City.

The city is rich in culture and religion, it is the 3rd most visited city in Europe and the most popular travel destination in Italy. There are so many places to visit in Rome but of all the places that you can visit, you might start with the Trevi Fountain. A fountain in the Trevi rione, standing almost 26 meters high and 20 meters wide. Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and arguably the most beautiful fountain in all of Rome and one of the most famous fountains in the world. Few cities in the world offer such variety and few tourists leave without a fervent desire to return and is no wonder why a natural occurrence is to fall in love with the city. Rome's tourist activities and sights create fascination in the mind of a traveller and the city rewards you as no other city can.

Rome boasts one attraction after another, but the Roman Forum and the Colosseum stay with you forever. The Roman Forum is a small, rectangular forum surrounded by the ruins of ancient government buildings at the center of the city, situated in the valley between the Capitoline hill and the Palatine hill. Many of the oldest and most important structures of the ancient city were located near the Forum. The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of Rome, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire and probably the most impressive building of the Roman empire. The structure of the building has fallen into ruins, but it still is an imposing and beautiful sight.

The endless choice of shopping facilities in Rome, can by itself occupy a tight itinerary. Here you will find anything from the most famous designer labels in Italian fashion to the cheaper outlets outside the city and flea markets. The most famous shopping streets in the city are three parallel streets that all meet up with Via del Corso, the Via Condotti, Via Frattina and Via Borgognona. The most famous of all three fashion streets is Via Condott. Via Condotti is the center of Rome's fashion and it contains the greatest number of Rome based fashion retailers, equivalent to Milan's Via Montenapoleone and London's Bond Street.

Eating out in Rome is a remarkable experience. Rome's cuisine is simple, with strong flavours, overflowing with dressings and anything but low calories. Rome city is lined up with so many outstanding restaurants and bars that it can be hard choosing to which restaurant you will go. Italian cuisine is among the most popular in the the world. Many of Rome's restaurants don't have English menus so if you are a gourmet then study up on the Italian language of food. The streets around the Piazza Navona offer places with reasonable prices, though prices often get more expensive at restaurants on actual piazza's.

Rome has two three main airports, Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport, the Ciampino International Airport and the Roma Urbe Airport. Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport is Italy's largest airport, located some 35 km from Rome's city centre. The airport serves as a hub for Italian national carrier Alitalia. Domestic flights depart from passenger station Terminal A, some domestic and international flights from Terminal B and transatlantic flights from Terminal C. Rome Ciampino Airport, also known as Giovan Battista Pastine Airport, is a joint commercial and military airport, situated 12km south-east of central Rome.

Accommodation Overview

Rome's ever increasing popularity has had an inevitable impact on hotel rates. The city today is a more expensive destination to stay than most other cities in Europe. It may not be cheap, but the general standard of holiday accommodation in Rome has improved dramatically over the past few years. Today there is more luxury lodgings in Rome than ever before, but if you prefer more modest accommodation, you will still have plenty to choose from. In Rome you will also find plenty of mid range and budget hotels and motels. Many of the Rome's cheapest and modest accommodation are located near the Stazione Termini.

Italian hotels and holiday resorts are classified on a star system, the more stars, the more facilities a hotel will have. Renting a holiday apartment is usually a cheaper and more flexible alternative. For anyone who is planning to spend longer time in Rome, we recommend that you rent a holiday villa or a holiday apartment in the city or nearby.
