City Overview

Windermere is the largest natural lake in England stretching all the way from Ambleside to Newby Bridge. The lake is very popular with holiday makers and is the main tourist centre for the South Lakes area of Lake District National Park. It contains eighteen wooded islands and the largest being the privately owned Belle Isle lying opposite Bowness. The lake has three main towns on its east bank, the twin towns of Bowness and Windermere and the Ambleside town which lies further to the north. The water of the lake reaches a depth of around 220 feet and the lake is extremely popular with water sports enthusiasts. The town of Windermere itself is split into two main areas; Windermere town and Bowness on Windermere.

More than eight million visitors come to the region's mountains and lakes every year. Bowness on Windermere is situated halfway down the eastern shore of the lake. Windermere has grown over the past decades into a resort with many fine hotels, resorts and private guest houses. Windermere and Bowness are set within the Lake District National Park, each with their own character and charm. The south-east part of the Lake District National Park is the most famous and most visited area and has been one of the UK's most popular places for holidays and summer homes for over 150 years. The other smaller islands, owned by the National Trust, the Royal Windermere Yacht Club and the National Park Authority include Silver Holme, Hen Holme, Maiden Holme, Thompson Holme, Crow Holme and the Lilies of the Valley.

Windermere is the headquarters of the Royal Windermere Yacht Club and the centre for all forms of water sports including water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, sailing and fishing. The Windermere Ferry service runs from Ferry Nab on the east shore of the lake to Ferry House at Far Sawrey on the west bank. It runs all year except for the Boxing and Christmas Day. Visit one of the many tourist attractions, such as the Windermere Steamboat Museum and the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole. On the eastern shore of the town is the Fell Foot Park, a lakeshore Victorian park, an ideal place to enjoy access to the lake and a perfect place for picnics.
